City of Austin, Texas Passes Paid Sick Leave Ordinance

The City of Austin has passed a local ordinance which provides for paid sick leave to employees working within the city. Employers must give earned sick time to those who perform 80 hours or more of work within the city during a calendar year. Independent contractors and unpaid interns are excluded. The new ordinance will be effective October 1, 2018. Employers with 5 or fewer employees will have until 2020 to meet the new requirements.
